PERSIAN YALAMEH WOOL RUG
PERSIAN YALAMEH WOOL RUG
This distinctive Iranian Yalameh rug stands out for its beautiful tribal-style ornamentation. It is a hand-knotted wool rug—composed entirely of wool, with both the warp and the weft made from wool. Furthermore, the rug features an exquisite finish: it is hand-bound using wool yarn in two different shades, a detail that continues as a chain stitch along both sides of the fringe.
Yalameh carpets originate from the Fars region of southern Iran and are known primarily for their characteristic diamond-shaped medallions.
In the center of this carpet lie three large, serrated-edged, diamond-shaped medallions. The central field is densely covered with small floral and bird motifs, which bring a sense of liveliness to the overall geometric impression. Also frequently present is the S-shaped motif—a protective, auspicious symbol often found on other tribal carpets as well. On the carpet’s light-colored border, a row of diamonds continues; in the tradition of Persian carpet weaving, these signify balance and harmony.
